Deusi-Bhailo 2024: Going Door to Door with Music
BMGR members during Deusi-Bhailo visits, Tihar 2024
Every Tihar, Bhutanese Nepali communities across the US carry on the tradition of Deusi-Bhailo — groups of singers going house to house, performing traditional songs, blessing the household, and receiving gifts or donations in return. It's one of the most joyful traditions we have, and for BMGR, it's also one of the most important.
In 2024, our Deusi-Bhailo team visited nine homes across the Rochester area. We loaded up the instruments — harmonium, madal, shakers — squeezed into cars, and spent the evening driving from house to house, singing at each doorstep until we were invited inside.
The numbers: we raised $3,877 in total. After expenses on instruments and speakers ($926), we netted $2,951 for the group. Every dollar goes directly toward supporting BMGR's programs — our weekly harmonium classes, upcoming concerts, and operational costs.
But honestly, the money is only part of it. What makes Deusi-Bhailo special is the way it connects people. At every home, families welcomed us in, offered tea and snacks, and sat with us while we played. Kids watched from the stairs. Grandparents clapped along. For those few minutes at each house, it felt like we were back in Jhapa or Chirang — like the distance between Bhutan and Rochester had collapsed.
Tek dai, our treasurer, kept careful records of every donation. Birkha dai coordinated the route and logistics. Lalit dai and Ruban drove and carried equipment. Everyone contributed. That's how BMGR works — there's no hierarchy when it comes to putting in effort.
We plan to continue Deusi-Bhailo every year. If you'd like BMGR to visit your home during the next Tihar season, reach out to us. We'd love to bring the music to your doorstep.
