Remembering Narayan Gopal: A Night of Music and Memory
Certificate presentation at the Narayan Gopal Smriti Saanjh, December 9, 2023
On Saturday, December 9, 2023, BMGR organized the Narayan Gopal Smriti Saanjh — an evening dedicated to the memory of Narayan Gopal, the legendary "Swar Samrat" (Emperor of Voice) of Nepali music. The event was held at the Genesee Valley Moose Lodge on West Henrietta Road, and it turned out to be one of the most meaningful evenings we've ever put together.
For those unfamiliar, Narayan Gopal Guruwacharya was the most celebrated vocalist in the history of Nepali music. His songs — Euta Sathi Chhaina, Yo Samjhine Man Chha, Malai Maaf Garideu — are known by every Nepali speaker alive. He passed away in 1990, but his voice still fills living rooms, wedding halls, and quiet evenings across the diaspora.
The idea behind the event was simple: bring the community together and let the music speak. Members performed solo and group renditions of Narayan Gopal's most beloved songs. Birkha dai led on harmonium, Lalit dai held the rhythm on tabla, and our vocalists — Usha, Harkapal, Ruban, Tek — each took turns on the mic. Kiran Pele dai performed on stage as well, bringing his stage presence from over 100 dramas to a musical setting.

What made the evening special wasn't just the music — it was the feeling in the room. Older members of the community sang along from their seats. Some had tears in their eyes. The songs of Narayan Gopal carry a weight that goes beyond melody — they carry the memory of a homeland, of people we've lost, of a life before resettlement.
We also used the event to present certificates of appreciation to members and supporters who have contributed to BMGR's growth. It was a small gesture, but it mattered.

The Narayan Gopal Smriti Saanjh wasn't a one-time thing. It set a standard for what BMGR events can be — organized, emotional, and rooted in our Bhutanese Nepali identity. We plan to make it an annual tradition.
If you weren't there, I hope the photos in our gallery give you a sense of what the evening felt like. And if you were — thank you for being part of it.
